On June 22, 1847, Hansen Gregory, a 16yr old American, claimed to have invented the ring-shaped doughnut while cooking aboard a lime-trading ship, even though the term "dough-nut" was recorded in a short story as early as 1908.
The donut! What's not to like about them. They're made and consumed in every corner of the world. Some varieties are savory and filled with bean paste or minced meats. But the majority like theirs sweet. Fillings range from jams and custards to cottage cheese. Coatings are equally as diverse; such as cocoanut, glazes, sprinkles, nuts, and cinnamon and the donut itself comes in multitude of flavors from buttermilk and chocolate to pumpkin and blueberry, and everything in between.
Canadians take top honors for consuming the most doughnuts, and they also have the most doughnut stores per capita. Apparently they take their donuts seriously and I think I know why. Have you ever had a bad day after starting it off with a donut or two? I know I sure haven't.
