What if Frances Bacon were sitting in a classroom today. Since the powers that be no longer believe that teaching Art to young people is necessary, and therefore a great way to cut costs in schools budgets, would he still have a chance to become the famous painter that he was? His was a singular genius that distorted reality and made it other worldly. He used his friends and acquaintances as props for some of the most fantastic paintings the world ever laid eyes on. But, his portraits of himself were arguably the greatest paintings of his career, notwithstanding his paintings of the Popes. Will we see another Frances Bacon in our lifetime? Probably not, if we continue to underfund the arts and devalue their importance in society.
