August 21, 2011 - Stuck - "I" is for I Try

It’s a hot and humid Sunday here on Long Island and we’re expecting severe thunderstorms this evening, which makes it a good day for me to catch up on some writing. The weather has caused me and my buds to cancel a trip on Sea Tea for the second straight week, and so I’m going to try and be productive. It’s really been a long time since I’ve last posted anything real on here and for good reason…

Stuck

Ever since my little physical mishaps last weekend, I’ve been in kind of a bad place. Not only has the pain from my injuries made me cranky, but other things have happened this week to put me in this state. I tried writing about it beginning on Tuesday, and I wrote a lot, but got lost somewhere along the way and I never published what I wrote. Though I’ve been wanting to put out more here in the way of posts rather than just music videos, I’ve been having a hard time finding the right words to say.

I guess it all started with an email I received on Monday night. It was from a reader who had a lot to say about me in response to some content I’d put out there. Though he never referred to any specific post, I can surmise what he was referring to, which was a piece of poetry I’d written last Sunday that I posted and then took down. Though the email was pretty insulting and kind of nasty, there were chunks of things he said that made me think and I’ve been stuck as to where to go next.

Ever since I started writing regularly here I’ve written in a certain way, very open with my thoughts and feelings. I’ve long since struggled with writing in this manner. I know that I make myself vulnerable to criticisms and even personal attacks, but I guess that’s just the risk I take in putting it all out there. At the advice of some and based on the readership and commentary I’ve received, I have continued to write in the same manner more or less for almost nine months now. I don’t know if, how often or how long I will be keeping up with this, but I do hope to find myself somehow once again.

I spent about four hours writing a post in response to the email, and the long piece turned into something big and is still unfinished, sitting in my document file waiting to be published in one form or another. Throughout the writing process I was faced with this struggle once again about what and what not to put out there. It’s definitely been the most I’ve questioned myself yet, as you can tell from my long absence. I’m not absolutely sure yet whether I will finish and then publish that piece, as it does make myself somewhat more vulnerable and I’m not sure if I want to go there. Other experiences I had during the week have only added to the confusion and hopefully I will sort them out soon. Stay tuned…

Doctor visits and giving more blood…

This coming Friday is my first ever colonoscopy…yay! One of the doctor’s I spoke about going to seethis summer was one who suggested this to me, not that I need one, but he says it wouldn’t hurt and so I figured why not. I spent some time this week going to get my blood work done as well as a pre-op checkup, both of which reminded me why I don’t like going to the doctor’s in the first place.

The blood test was no biggie, except for the needle, which I hate, but going to my regular doctor for the evaluation was one hour I’d like to have back. I walked in and the doctor I was supposed to see was sitting there thumbing through a magazine. Okay. There was only one patient in the waiting room, and so I figured I’d be in and outta there fast. I was wrong! I sat there in the waiting room as no less than three people kept coming in and going in to see the doctor ahead of me. I didn’t mind too much because they all looked pretty sick and I was only there for a regular check-up anyway, but still why make an appointment if both parties are not going to keep it? My time is as valuable as the doctor’s, no?

After about a half-hour’s wait, I was finally called in to see the doctor. The nurse took all my vitals and set out to get the EKG machine, which was required for my prep. I took off my shirt and lay down as she put all of those icy cold sticky things all over me. We chatted as she went about her work and within a few minutes she was done. The doctor came in soon after and took a look at my folder, which had the EKG inside. She asked me if I was feeling alright and I told her that other than being a little stressed I felt fine.

She told me there were a couple of extra heartbeats on the EKG, which was a “concern.” I had had one done last year and that one was completely normal. She put the two together for me to see the difference. “Oh shit,” I thought, “I’m going to have a heart attack.” She explained to me that it probably wasn’t too serious, but if it were true, I could not go under anesthesia for the colonoscopy and I might have to do further testing. “Oh God!” She asked the nurse to do another EKG just to make sure. Well great, if I wasn’t nervous before…

I removed my shirt once again and lay back on the table. As the nurse came at me once again with those electrode thingys, she noticed my cell phone sticking out of my pocket. “Is that on?” she asked, pointing towards my pocket. It was. “Ah, that’s probably what did it, the extra beats. Those cell phones always mess with the machine.” I shut it off and she went ahead and did the second EKG. It was normal….whew!

Five Day Countdown…

So now I’ve got only five days before the big “C.” I’m not too nervous yet, but I’m sure I will be as it gets closer. And I just know the week is going to fly by of course. What I’m dreading most is Thursday. I can only consume clear liquids all day and then by six at night I gotta start drinking “the stuff.” From what I heard, that’s the worst part of the whole thing. I am not looking forward to this!

I is for “I Try”

I hope to be back soon to share some more of my so called life. In the meantime, here’s the “I” entry for the Z-A Blogger’s Challenge that’s taking me like six months to complete, lol. It’s Macy Gray’s first song, a great one called “I Try.” Enjoy!

Yesterday I read something of my friend Demetri's page that I just had to repost on my own. It went a little something like this:

Dear whoever is reading this.smile,ur beautiful, and someone out there is crazy about you. Life is too short to be unhappy :-)

I figured it's too good not to share with even more people on here, so I'm posting it along with MJB's feel-good song, "Just Fine." I think they make a perfect pair for a bit of lifting up for whoever might need it on this rainy day. So smile, remember you're beautiful and you are loved, whether you know it or not! No matter what you will always be just fine...oh, and click "play" and you'll definitely smile! Peace!

K is for Keep On Movin'

This is the song that first put Soul II Soul on the map with its smooth grooves that were replicated over and over in the late 80's and early 90's. I had the good fortune of seeing them perform at the Palladium in NYC back in the early 90's and it's really a shame their time was so short-lived.

"Keep on movin'", another one of my mantras for life. Though things can get awfully tough sometimes, the only thing you can do is keep on moving, right?

L is for I Love Lucy Music

Ever since I learned that it was Lucille Ball's 100th birthday today, I've spent the morning posting some of my favorite clips from the show on Facebook and reliving such classics as Viteameatavegimin, Lucy's job at the candy factory, and the grape stomping scene. Then I got to thinking that I just happen to be on the letter "L" in the Z-A Blogger's Challenge and I then I started looking at some of the great songs from the show and figured I'd post em' here. So without further adieu, here are some classic musical moments from the great "I Love Lucy"

We're Having a Baby

Ah, I loved this one! Lucy finds a great way to break it to Ricky that she's "expecting" and he breaks into this sweet, sweet tune!

Cuban Pete

Ricky Ricardo sang some cool Cuban flavored stuff, including this one...."Boom chickee boom, boom chickee boom, boom chickee boom..."

Friendship

Who can forget this hysterical scene between Lucy and Ethel? Uh oh, they bought the same dress for the benefit and neither one is too happy about it, lol.

Babalu

Finally, we come to one of Ricky's most famous songs, this time sung as a duet with the very adorable Little Ricky.

Of course there's much more fun music from the "I Love Lucy" show, and you can check most of them out on YouTube. I hope you've enjoyed this little retrospective as much as I have!

M is for The Mexican

He's called Fernandez
Livin' on a gun
Dreams of Santa Anna
Fighting in the sun

Long before David Guetta there was a deejay/producer named John "Jellybean" Benitez. Jellybean had a few hits back in the 80's, including "Who Found Who?" with Elisa Fiorillo and "Sidewalk Talk" with then girlfriend Madonna. (Jellybean played the part of Miss M's boyfriend in her "Borderline video.)

This one was more of a club than a pop hit, in fact it was Jellybean's first #1 Dance song. I used to play my 12" single of "The Mexican" out! The song is a cover of an earlier tune by a band named Babe Ruth and Janita Haan, who sang the song originally, sang on this one, too! I haven't heard this one in a long time, and I still remember the words...

N is for Plenty of Great Songs

Happy Saturday everyone! Well, we're up to the letter "N" in our quest to finally get through this long overdue Z to A Blogger's Challenge, and like I've done with other letters before, the letter "N" has quite a few noteworthy musical connotations for me...

N is for Naughty Girls (Need Love, Too)

Before Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, and Kim Kardashian there was Samantha Fox. Samantha Fox was a British poster model back in the 80's who turned to music with the help of Full Force (famous for working with Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam). It's funny, my brother and I loved her for very different reasons....he always had her on his wall and I always had her in my CD player, lol. Samantha had several club and pop hits, and this was one her biggest.

Naughty Girls (Need Love Too) - Greatest Hits

N is for Nu Nu

"What's a Nu Nu?," you ask. Well it's a very catchy, doo woppy song from an artist called Lidel Townsell from back in 1992. Some of you may remember it....it's very catchy and one of those types of songs you'll be singing for hours after you listen too it. Check it out:

Nu Nu - Ultimate House Megamix

N is for Neutron Dance

"Someone stole my brand new Chevrolet
and the rent is due I've got no place to stay"

That's my favorite line from this one! The Pointer Sisters used to be hella cool back in the day, and this one was one of their biggest hits, from the movie "Beverly Hills Cop," with Eddie Murphy. Nothing but fun!!!!

Neutron Dance (From

N is for Never

Since this post is for so many songs and my musical tastes have always been across the board, I wanted to share one here that's rockin'. Heart is comprised of the Wilson sisters, beautiful voiced Annie and guitarist Nancy. They had several great songs back in the 70's and 80's and this one is hands down my all time favorite!

Heart - Never by EMI_Music
Never - Heart

N is for Nobody's Supposed to Be Here

Love, love, love this one. This was THE dance anthem back in 1998, and it still fills dance floors whenever it's played. Awesome dance song!

Dance Vault Mixes - Nobody's Supposed to Be Here: Deborah Cox - Deborah Cox

N is for No Reason to Cry

The last "N" song of the day is a freestyle song by one of the princesses of the genre, Ms. Judy (pronounced "Hoodi") Torres. A new friend of mine, Jeremy, who I found out has great taste in music, and I were talking about freestyle yesterday and he told me that he met Judy one time. Joe and I used to love her and this song.... It is sooooo freestyle! Unfortunately there weren't too many vids to choose from with this one, and this one getes cut off a little at the end, but it's a live performance that's slammin'.

Judy Torres: The Greatest Hits - Judy Torres

Well, I could go on and on with more "N" songs: N is also for No Frills Love, Not Myself Tonight, Nothing Really Matters, None of Your Business, No Woman, No Cry and so many more. In the meantime, I hope you've enjoyed the "N" songs I've shared here. I know I did. Have a great day!

O is for Oh Sheila

Just yesterday my friend and coworker Wendy were talking about my blog and the Z to A Challenge came up. "Oh my God, I've got to finish that!" In the busy-ness that has been the last month since school ended I had forgotten all about it. Well, though it really should have been over by the end of May, here it is July 27th and I'm only on the letter "O." I did say back then that no matter how long it takes me I would get it done and now that it's back on my mind, hopefully I will get it done soon! If you want to check out past posts on this particular challenge, which is all dedicated to music, check out the "Z to A Blogger's Challenge" label below and to the right.

"Oh Sheila" is a #1 R&B song from 1985 sung by a group called Ready for the World. The song has that quick, drum background remniscent of the Minneapolis sound that was so popular back thenn and I played it out on my CD player. Though I rarely take a listen to it anymore, I still love it when I do. Btw, there whole albumm was great, too! Do you remember "Oh Sheila?"

Song of the Day - P is for 'Please Don't Go', by Nayobe

Unfortunately, there's no video for this song, at least the original version of it. The song was recorded back in 1984 and I don't think I discovered it until the late eighties/early nineties. It's one of those classic dance/club songs with a great dance track, nice vocals and equally cool lyrics. It was the only hit for this Afro-Cuban singer called Nayobe, and it's a really good one!

It's funny, but the backdrop for the video of the song is the label from the 12" record of the original, which I used to own. I remember lots of great records with the label "The Fever...Catch It!" Ah, those were the days! Take a listen here to Nayobe's great 'Please Don't Go':

Please Don't Go (Original Version) - Freestyle Classics, Vol. 1

Please Don't Go

Sweet, sweet love,
Dark empty nights
Begged you to stay
Now you're far, far away...

There's something scary about the look that's in your eyes
There's hidden anger in your face
There had been trouble and it comes as no surprise
You say tonight someone has taken someone else's life
Not much will come from out of anger and revenge
But tell me when we'll ---
I'm begging you please
I'm on my hands and knees
Don't do something crazy, I'm begging you

Chorus:
Please don't go, please don't go
Don't go there tonight
It just isn't right
You may not come back to me
Our future you'll never see
Your throwing my life plans away
Please don't go

The only thing we have that we can call our own
Is this sweet love that we share
But if you leave tonight you may not come home
And thats just one thought I can't bear
Lets run away from here, to some place far away
Cause if we stay our love won't last another day
Don't throw my love aside
Because of your foolish pride

Chorus

I wanted you to stay
But still you went away
Together we can run
Now look what they had done
I'll never feel your touch again
I'm left to see this tragic end
Your throwing our love life away

Please don't go, please don't
Please don't go, I'm begging you
Repeat (4x)

Q is for Queer as Folk (Music!)

Warning: This content may not be suitable for all viewers.

Queer as Folk was a groundbreaking hit series on the Showtime Network that aired from 2000 to 2005. The show was the first of its kind here in the U.S., based on the British series of the same name. The show centered around the lives of a group of gay friends in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and tackled all sorts of issues that surround the gay community.

At first, most of the hype around the show focused on the racy, never before seen scenes of male on male nudity, but eventually the shock wore off and the show became taken more seriously for its superb acting and its mesmerizing storylines. The cast of the show was a talented group of actors, featuring Gale Harold as the show's central figure Brian Kinney, Hal Sparks as his best friend Michael Novotny, Randy Harrison as Justin, Brian's on again-off again love interest, and two time Emmy Award winning Sharon Gless as Debbie Novotny, Michael's proud and outspoken mother.

Since this Z-A Blogger's Challenge is all about music, I'm going to focus on some of the fabulous music that accompanied the adventures of Brian and Justin, Michael, Emmett, Ted and the rest of the folks at Club Babylon, Pittsburgh's resident fictional hotspot in the show. But before I get to some of that stuff, I'd like to start off with the theme song to the original British series, a fun, island-sounding tune with spoken overlays that set-up that series, as well as the American one. Check it out...

Then of course there's fast-moving theme to the American version of the show:

The next one is from the first season. Justin, who's falling quickly for promiscuous playboy Brian, tries to stir up his jealousies by performing in an amateur strip tease performance at Babylon. Though Justin was a big hit, his little trick ultimately failed. After all, it was only the first season.

High School Confidential

The next one came at a tender moment of the first season, after Brian's college sweetheart, Lindsay, gave birth to his son, along with her lover and Brian's newfound nemesis Melanie. The song is one of my all time favorites, a tender and inspirational tune sung by M People's Heather Small.

Proud

'Dive in the Pool,' by Barry Harris and featuring the vocals of Pepper Mashay, was a bona fide club hit even before it appeared on QAF's Season 1 Soundtrack. The video accompanying this song is a typical Club Babylon sequence that was shown throughout the series and is pretty much waht you might see in any big gay nightclub.

Dive in the Pool

Sexy Boy

Though this vid depicts scenes from the American version of Queer as Folk, the song is actually from the UK series. Sultry, sexy...sexy boy!

Straight to Number One

This is the Showtime series' answer to 'Sexy Boy.'

Ten, kiss me on the lips...
Nine, run your fingers through my hair...
Eight, touch me...slowly...slowly
Seven, hold it! Let's go straight to number one...

The last onse is one of my favorites from the entire series. The video was filmed as a promo for the third season. Beautiful and deep voiced singer Kristine W is joined by the cast for what looked like a really fun video to make. It's got a great hook and is danceable as all heck. Check it out...

Some Lovin'

Well, I hope you've enjoyed these clips from the great Showtime series 'Queer as Folk.' All of this listening and I'm ready to watch the whole series all over again. I miss it and the great music that came with it. If you'd like to purchase any of the songs presented here, I highly recommend the Season One Soundtrack for starters. You can get it below:

R is for Rock and Roll

By now most of you already know that I'm a club queen (not really a queen!). That is, club/dance music is by far my thing and it's what I listen to the most. But I wasn't always that way. Back when I was in my teens I used to love rock and roll and every now and again I still enjoy a good old fashioned rock song. Since we're on the letter "R," I figured I'd take this opportunity to share a few of my favorite rock tunes,, you know, the kind that make you wanna move with hard rocking guitars and shout it out lyrics. Check it out...

S is for Summer Songs

Okay, we're back on track, a little, with the Z-A Blogger's Challenge. Today's letter is "S" and since this is one of my favorite times of year, I decided to dedicate this one to summer. In recent weeks I posted two articles on Y!CN: 10 Great Summer Albums and Awesome Summer Songs for All Sorts of Summertime Scenarios and both articles put some of those songs in my head, especially the ones that I haven't listened to in years. So, this post is dedicated to some of those great songs that many of us associate with summer. Take a look at the articles to check even more of them out, but in the meantime, enjoy these choice selections...

S is for Summer Songs

Summer Nights
- John Travolta and Olivia Newton John

Anyone who was around in 1978 will remember that classic summer movie, Grease. The film was all about a summer romance between John Travolta's Danny Zuko and Olivia Newton John's Sandy Olsson and was full of memorable tunes such as this one. 'Summer nights' comes at the beginning of the movie and I can remember playing it over and over again during that summer of 78. Check it out:

Grease (Soundtrack from the Motion Picture) - Various Artists

Cruel Summer - Bananarama

The year was 1983 and these three harmonious British gals were just beginning to make waves with this summer hit...

Cruel Summer - The Very Best of Bananarama

Soak Up the Sun - Sheryl Crow

This one from folk/rock/pop singer Sheryl Crow is one of my all time favorite summer, feel good songs.

I'm gonna soak up the sun, gonna tell everyone to lighten up...

Soak Up the Sun - C'Mon C'Mon

Rock the Boat - Hues Corporation

So I'd like to know where, you got the notion...

Oh man, I remember this one from when I was a wee one! So catchy and so timeless...

Rock the boat
Don't rock the boat baby
Rock the boat
Don't tip the boat over

Rock the Boat - Milk (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

The Locomotion - Little Eva

Everybody's doin' a brand new dance now...

This one's not necessarily a summer song, per se, but it makes for a great old fashioned summer dance song. Kylie even remade this one once upon a time!

You've got to move your hips now...

Loco-Motion - Golden Hits Forever, Vol. 5

Kokomo - The Beach Boys

What would summer music be without the Beach Boys? This one, from the 1988 film, 'Cocktail,' is one of the later songs from these California, surf music innovators, but it's just as loved as any of their big surfin' hits.

Beach Boys - Kokomo by jpdc11
Kokomo - Sounds of Summer - The Very Best of The Beach Boys

Let's Get Loud - J-Lo

This one's perfect for a hot summer dance, with a little Latin flava! Love this song!!!

Let's Get Loud - On the 6

Well there you have it, some choice selections for pure summer music enjoyment. Though summer hasn't officially begun yet, the weather's already nice and the time is ripe for some great summer music. I hope you've enjoyed my picks for some of the best summer songs out there and remember to check out my articles above for more great, hot summer tunes. Until next time, peace!
