     Bubble Gum was invented in 1928 by Philadelphia-based Fleer Company.  Walter E. Diemer, an accountant by day at Fleer enjoyed his free time experimenting and concocting gum recipes.  He explained in an interview later in life that his creating bubble gum was an lucky accident. By 1937, Fleer put the new form of gum called "Dubble Bubble" on the national market. Each wrapped, square pink chunk included a comic strip inside starting in 1930, featuring twin brothers Dub and Bub. A new character named Pud replaced them in1950.


Dubble Bubble was even distributed in military rations during World War II up until 1942. Because of war efforts, latex and sugar became scarce.  This briefly put a halt to bubble gum manufacturing in the U.S. By 1951, Fleer was again able to manufacture Dubble Bubble, but a competitor had now arrived on the scene.  The Topps Company out of Brooklyn, New York had developed its Bazooka Bubble gum product in 1947 shortly after World War II ended and was now ready to put its product on the market. In 1953 Bazooka also started including a comic with each piece of gum.  The character in the comic was known as "Bazooka Joe", who went on to become an iconic figure in the world of gum.


     By 1954, Fleer was sponsoring bubble gum blowing contests, which grew in quickly in popularity and were eventually televised. Dubble Bubble was introduced as the first five-pack of gum in 1957, and began selling gumballs in 1999.  Over time Fleer even added new flavors such as apple, grape and watermelon.  Eventually in 1998, the Dubble Bubble name was purchased, the recipe changed and the comic strips discontinued, but Pud remained the mascot.  In 2004, the Tootie Roll company wanting to expand its presence in the bubble gum category, acquired Dubble Bubble and continues to grow the brand with global distribution. The gum is sold in 50 countries.
     Gum is big business.  The Wrigley Company for instance has manufacturing plants around the world just to keep up with demand.  From Scoresby and Sydney, Austrailia to Guanghou, Guangdong, People's Republic of China, others in Nairobi, Kenya; Baddi, India; Poznan, Poland; and Tarazona and Santiga, Spain.

     Todays gum base is made of man-made latex and divided into 2 major categories, chewing and bubble gum, with the latter having more elasticity. In recent years, nonstick gum bases for chewing and bubble gums have been formulated to satisfy the chewing needs of more consumers.

     Cognitive powers are increased by chewing bubblegum.  The area of our brain which is important for the memory is stimulated and the activity in certain parts of the brain increase. The blood flow to the brain is also enhanced as a result of chewing a bubblegum. Several studies have proved that chewing bubblegum increase the blood flow to the brain by twenty to forty percent. 
     Stress is also reduced when people chew bubblegum.  Concentration increases and tension reduces. Even when someone feels irritated or angry, he may calm down his anger by chewing bubblegum.
     A lot of people chew bubblegum to avoid overeating. It acts as a great snack for the people. Digestion is also improved as a result of chewing bubblegum. When people chew, the flow of saliva is enhanced. It promotes people to swallow frequently. Another benefit of chewing bubble gums is that its good for your oral health. The increase in saliva in the mouth helps prevent the occurrence of cavities.

40 Indian Students About To Create 'Pico satellite'

40 students from seven engineering colleges in Bangalore and Hyderabad are part of a team guided by ISRO to create a 'Pico satellite'.

These engineering students are in no hurry to have fun after classes. They linger in the labs
instead of accepting campus placements.They are on a mission possible: they are busy building the smallest satellite for their country at the Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology, Bangalore.

Forty students from seven engineering colleges in Bangalore and Hyderabad are part of a team guided by ISRO to create a 'Pico satellite'. The satellite, which resembles a small cube, weighs only 850 gm and has a volume of 1.1 litres. It contains an imaging camera with a 90m resolution and will perform the function of a remote-sensing satellite.

"The challenge is to bring all the features of an ordinary satellite in this miniature form," says
Chetan Angadi, one of the team members. The satellite will be launched in December through PSLV to a 700-km orbit.

The students have prepared a ground station. An antenna has been placed on the terrace to detect the position of the satellite. They will control the satellite from this ground station. All the
chores - from designing to welding and compiling of structures - are done by the students themselves.

The group is a heterogeneous one with students from NITTE, RVCE, BMSIT, MSRIT in Bangalore and IARE, CBIT and VITS in Hyderabad. While the Bangalore students have made Nitte their base, their Hyderabad mates work from their respective college labs.

The students divided themselves into different "sub systems" and carry out the various functions independently. "We did not know anything about it when we began. We learn one step at a time and implement it. That is how we progressed," says Raghavendra S, a core group member.



They are regularly guided by scientists from ISRO. "We try out different options and approach the ISRO. They decide on which option to follow," he says. The work has proved to be a herculean task.

They have been working for the past one-and-a-half years on this project.

The idea was conceived by a group of IV semester students from Bangalore who was inspired by a talk at the International Astronautical Federation in December 2007.
