Boy am I in trouble! It is 1:30 AM and I am wide awake once again. I should be sleeping and I will once I finish this post. There are exactly seven days left of summer vacation for me and I need to get into a better sleep mode, though it’s not gonna be easy.



Ending summer with a bang!



After the past few days of being stuck in the house, the weather has turned beautiful. I’ve done most of the cleanup in my yard and though I have to go to school in the morning for a bit, I am ready to enjoy these last few days of my first summer off. Of course that involves clubbing, hehe…going to Splash tomorrow with my friend Ivan and Circus Wednesday, Splash again on Thursday and of course the big show on Fire Island this weekend. Come Monday morning I am going to be sooooo depressed, lol.



Some fortune…good and bad



I had two hits of luck today, both having to do with money, and one was good, the other bad. The good news had to do with my electricity being out in the downstairs of my house. I said yesterday that I had to call an electrician today to fix the baffling problem, and I did. I called Dew Edward & Son right here in Patchogue and they came with good news. Apparently, there are three electrical wires coming into my house from the transformer across the street and one of them got disconnected. It was just hanging there and I couldn’t believe none of us saw it yesterday. Long story short…LIPA’s got to fix it and these very nice gentlemen didn’t charge me a penny! Thanks guys!



Now on to the bad…since I was home cleaning the yard all day, I figured I’d take my car in for some much needed checking up. Another long story short…I needed brakes, two tires, a tune-up and an oil change…grand total: $1,000!!!! WTF? Thank God I have a credit card, and I’m not going to get sick over it. At least my car is safe and running great.



Writing, writing and more writing



I’ve been in a zone tonight. I was invited over my neighbor and friend Terry’s house for dinner earlier. Her daughter Margaret was trying to save some rapidly defrosting food she’d had in her freezer (no power!) and they needed help eating it, lol. I got home a little after 9 and I’ve been writing ever since. It’s funny, but my eyes were very droopy when I got home, but now, after hours of writing, I’ve become less and less tired. Once this is over, though, I’m headed into the shower and then taking a nosedive into my bed. I just hope I can sleep!



Well that’s all I’ve got for now. Here’s a video of Lady Gaga’s much talked about performance from last night’s VMA’s, which I missed. It’s really the only part of the show I’ve seen so far and I liked it. Hopefully I’ll get my TV back before MTV stops repeating it….

It's been a busy week for Lady Gaga. Yesterday her long-awaited album 'Born This Way' was finally released and hype is all over the place. She's been making appearances here, there and everywhere to promote the album, culminating with the opening mini-show to the Good Morning America Summer Concert Series this Friday. She was the musical guest on the season finale of SNL this past Saturday and this is one of her two performances.

I happen to like Gaga, as you probably already knew, and I just may have a few things to say about the album once I've had more than just a couple of listens. In the meantime, I love the title cut and this one, her latest hit 'Judas.' So enjoy the performance and stay tuned for more Gaga...

Boy am I tired! This has been the longest, dreariest week I can remember in a long, long time. It has been raining for what seems like forever, and as I said the other day in my W is for Weather post, your mood can be affected by the weather around you, and so…



Breaking down

Lately it seems like everything around me is breaking down. First it was the dishwasher, then the vacuum, and now the dehumidifier. I’ve got a broken window in my basement and I’m trying to be calm about all of it, but it’s not easy. If I end up leaving my house in the near future, and end up doing it as a short sale, then whatever money I spend will just be for naught, like money down the drain. Grrrrr!!!!!

So close and yet so far

School is winding down very quickly and this time of the year is especially draining for most teachers. In the grand wisdom of the New York State Education Department, we teachers are no longer required to teach as of about late April on. Why, you may ask. Well, the operative word here is “testing.” These poor kids and us poor teachers are taking and administering all sorts of test after test after test, and that’s not even counting the final exams in the middle of June. There’s no time to teach, only do what you can to prepare for and have the kids take the tests. Again, grrrr!!!!!

A-Z and Z-A Bloggers Challenge

Well, I’m almost at the end of the A-Z Challenge…just one letter to go: “Z.” The only thing is, I’m having trouble thinking of a topic for the letter and since I’ve got to delve right back into the Z-A Challenge, I’ve got to think of two! Any suggestions?

So much to do, so little time

I think that what’s making me even more tired is that I’ve definitely bit off more than I can chew, especially with writing. I love writing for all the sites that I write for, but I can’t seem to get stuff out often enough, at least effectively. I love writing for this blog, for it gives me an outlet to write anything and everything I want, but even lately I haven’t had the time to update it like I want to. I don’t exactly know the answer, but hopefully once school is done, I can focus more and be more efficient.

I’ve stopped publishing Pop Music News Weekly on Y!CN, though I would like to keep it going here somehow. I especially would like to cover the iTunes and Billboard Charts of the week because I find them interesting. We’ll see…

In the meantime, I’ve been neglecting my house in favor of writing lately. I wish I could afford a maid, but that’s just not possible, lol. I don’t know how to fix all of these things I have to do, and between the weather and that, I guess I’m feeling a little crappy (and that’s not even mentioning my allergies!).

On the lighter side…



Word on Twitter Tuesday was that Madonna was headed to Chicago to do a spot on Oprah’s big finale. The reports were confirmed later, but that’s not what excited me. Supposedly during the show, she announced that she is indeed, finally, working on a new album. I think that this is the longest time she’s ever gone between albums and now I’m officially excited. I’m needing new Madonna!



Saturday night marks the season finale of Saturday Night Live, as well. The guest host will be Justin Timberlake and the musical guest is Lady Gaga. Justin’s been on before and he’s been hilarious every time and Gaga…well Gaga. It’s gonna be a cool show so set your DVR’s.

Today is Easter Sunday and I have a hangover! I haven’t had a hangover for as far back as I can remember, but at least I remember last night, which is a good thing. I just took a couple of aspirin and I’m hoping that by the time I finish this, the pounding will stop. Ah, the price you pay for a good time!



Monster Ball

Last night a friend and I went to see Lady Gaga perform her Monster’s Ball show at the Nassau Coliseum. It was the first time I ever got tickets to a concert on the same day as the show, and it was tense almost all day long as we watched Stub Hub throughout the day hoping that the right tickets would come available at the right price and in the best spot. We got lucky! Instead of ending up in the rafters, which we expected, we got primo seats in just the first section up, Row A, directly opposite the stage. We couldn’t have asked for better, except….well, more on that later!




I love going to concerts! I’ve been to many of them in my life and I still get as excited as a kid in a candy store whenever I’m going to one, and yesterday was no exception. As soon as we booked the tickets, my mood immediately elevated. I grabbed my iPod and went straight to my Gaga folder. I remember when I first heard Fame Monster; I liked almost all of the songs the very first time. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again here that Gaga wouldn’t be as popular as she is without good, quality music, and her music IS quality!

After an awesome dinner at Bertucci’s, my friend and I headed off to the Coliseum. Surprisingly, there wasn’t a lot of traffic and we were there in no time. Not since the last KISS concert I went to have I seen so many people in costume. Gaga’s were everywhere, and in all stripes. There were bubbles and lace, sequins and heels, construction stripping and soda can hair rollers. I loved it! At one point a rather large bald man in fish net stockings, high heels and full makeup walked out on to the floor of the Coliseum to the frenzy of fans. He entertained them all by getting down to Michael Jackson. The party had just begun.

Next came a deejay and then the opening act, a punk/dance band called Semi-Precious Weapons. Not my kind of music, but during their set they had said that they’d been touring with Gaga since the beginning. She came to one of their shows in the city and liked what she saw, and so she’s a fan.

After the band had finished their set, it would be a long wait til Gaga. The set had finished at 9PM and Gaga didn’t come on until a little after 10. It was a frustratingly long hour, but once she came on all was forgotten.




Now I’m going to save the total review for a Y!CN article, but what I will say here is that she was great. The show was completely entertaining and she sounded just like her records. She played all of the hits, with the curious exception of her latest, ‘Judas.’ I was stuck in a section of farts who made me wonder why they had even come to the show in the first place. They sat for ‘Love Game,’ ‘Just Dance,’ and even ‘Telephone.’ I’m not the type of person to just get up and block views, so I just sat there dancing in my seat, but by the time she played ‘Poker Face’ I couldn’t control myself any longer.

The show was fast-moving, with nothing but up tempo stuff, except for a piano rendition of ‘Born This Way’ and a new song called ‘You and I.’ The rest was good, danceable joy, with ‘Paparazzi’ being one of my personal favorites!

Gaga spoke a lot!

“LONG ISLAND,” she screamed more than a dozen times to the frenzied response of the audience. She spoke of being bullied as a teenager and how her story should inspire others. As in the song, ‘Born This Way,’ she preached on the fact that everyone is special, no matter what their story, and I think that’s one of the things that empowers herself so much with her fans. It was the song she finished with, and when it was over, everyone walked away smiling. Stay tuned for more…

Gation Saturdays

After the concert, my friend and I headed out to Industry Nightclub, home of Gation Saturdays, one of the hottest gay nights on Long Island. All cylinders were a go last night as the club was simply a ten-minute drive from the Coliseum, and I wasn’t the one driving (thus the hangover!).

Gation was packed with people of all kinds, and thanks to my good buddy who recognized me a couple of weeks ago I was put on the guest list for a discount. Bingo! It was a blast from the get-go as my friend and I danced all night long, getting down and having fun with our fellow club goers. The music was awesome and a Britney Spears lookalike (uncanny!) performed some of that singer’s best, much to the delight of dancers all over the club.

Britney?

At one point, there were these three Latino guys dancing near us and suddenly one of them grabbed my friend from behind, whispering sweet nothings into his ear, I think. I laughed my ass off until his two friends sandwiched me during ‘Till the World Ends.’ As it turned out, the first guy, who sidled up to me after awhile, was Colombian, and he told me in very broken English that he was looking for a boyfriend. I just smiled and kept dancing, pretending that I didn’t understand him. My friend and I shared a chuckle about it afterwards and went on with our night.

I got home around 4AM, the same time I usually get home from Splash. It was a nice change of pace for me and I think I may go there again on a Saturday when I don’t feel like venturing into the city for some fun. Happy Easter!

I never was a religious person, being born and raised in a non-practicing Catholic family, so I’m not ashamed to admit that to me Easter is simply one of those religious holidays where I just have to spend time with my family. This will be my only form of writing today because I have to head out to mom’s for dinner at 3.

Not that I don’t believe in God. I do! I just don’t necessarily ascribe to any of the organized religions’ teachings specifically. I wrote a piece on it once; you can check it out here if you like:

Anyway, I do like Easter. It comes at a time of the year when the weather is turning nice, and I always liked coloring eggs, even though as a child I was deathly afraid of the Easter Bunny! So, to those who celebrate the holiday, I say Happy Easter to you all!

Well, it’s late already and I need to shower for Easter dinner. I hope to see my new friend later on tonight, at least for a bit, so I probably won’t be back on here until tomorrow. In the meantime I’ll leave you with another Gaga video, of course, to enjoy. Next up, Kylie!!!! Have a Happy Day!

Happy Easter everyone! Today's "Song of the Day" is one my favorite Lady Gaga songs (though I have many!) and I'm posting Lady Gaga this morning because I saw her last night at Nassau Coliseum and she absolutely rocked! The show was pretty outrageous, as I expected, though not as good as the Queen. What's amazing to me about Lady Gaga and her music is that for only having done two albums so far (yes, a third will be coming real soon!), she's got a lot of great hit songs already, including this one! Enjoy!

Happy Hump Day everybody! I say that with trepidation because since I’m on vacation I don’t consider this a real hump to want to get over. So far I’ve been enjoying my time and I don’t want it to end. I’ve been wanting to get back to a regular posting ever since I’ve been doing the A-Z Challenge and so today’s a good day to get going.

Today is April 20th, a date that’s already being noted all over the Internet. For those of you who aren’t in the know, the number ‘420’ is a code word for marijuana. Now I don’t want to say too much about it here, but I am one who believes that marijuana should be legalized. Considering the widespread use and even celebration of alcohol, I don’t think that pot is any worse. It’s all a matter of perception.

I remember about two years ago when Olympic gold medal swimmer Michael Phelps was busted for having pot. I wrote a piece on it, which you can read below. The article contains all I have to say on the subject and rather than rehash it here, I’ll just place the link for you to read if you like:

Splash Tuesday

As I had planned, last night I went to Splash. As many of you know, I love to dance and any chance I get to go dancing, I go for it. Tuesday nights are always a packed house and I like the music they play much better than on the weekends, so I went and had a fantastic time, except for one little thing…

Big oops…Caught in a lie!

Back on April 2nd, I wrote a post called the ‘NOW Generation.’ In it, I spoke of a friend whom I had recently reconnected with. We’d hung out a lot last summer and we lost contact when I was dating you know who. Not long after my breakup, he gave me a call and we saw each other a few times. He and I never really connected on a relationship level, but we enjoyed each other’s company every once in awhile. I have to admit, I have a soft spot for him.

Anyway, in that post I mentioned how he abandoned me at Splash one night and made me really angry. I left the bar without him, but ended up going back to drive him home. Ever since that night I’ve avoided him like the plague. He had texted me the day after, asking me if I was angry with him and I told him that I was, but I wouldn’t be forever. That boy is persistent.

In the past week, he’s texted me quite a few times, trying to get together. The last time was yesterday, and in his text he asked me if I was going to Splash. He must’ve remembered that I said I was going to go during the week of spring break and he wanted to tag along. I tried putting him off as long as I could, but eventually I had to answer him. I told him that I was going to see someone I had met the other night in the city (see below) and I wasn’t sure where we were going. He asked if we were going to go to Splash. (He really wanted to go!) I told him I didn’t think so, but I would call him if we were. That was a total lie, something which I rarely do, and as karma goes, I got caught.

The first thing I do when I get to the bar is check my coat. The bar was already buzzing with a crowd when I got there and there was a line at the coat check. There I am, waiting to check my coat, and who walks past me but him. Somehow, to my surprise, he managed to get there via the LIRR with a friend. He was impossible to avoid as we met face to face. He kissed me hello and went on his merry way. I was a little stunned and I felt guilty for having gotten caught in a lie and things were awkward at first as I proceeded to avoid him like the plague.

As the night wore on, we bumped into each other a few times and at one point he asked me once again if I was angry with him, and I told him I wasn’t, which was true. I knew from that question that he knew why I had lied and all of a sudden things seemed okay between us. We each did our own thing the rest of the night, occasionally sharing a bump and grind on the dance floor. It was actually kind of fun.

I took on the role of protector, as he had gotten pretty smashed and there were some guys trying to take advantage of that. I had to step in a few times, letting the guys know that he had someone looking out for him. Around 3AM, he told me that the friend he had come with got kicked out, and so I offered him a ride home, which he took.

It was actually nice having someone to talk to on the way home. My friend is really a good guy…he’s just a little misguided and sometimes it comes out. I think that maybe we’ve entered a whole new realm in our relationship and it’ll be interesting to see how things turn out.



And speaking of guys…

Last Saturday I met a new guy at Splash. It was another late night as he and I danced our butts off til the wee hours of the morning. Afterwards I drove him home to Queens and we had our first chance to speak a little more in depth once we were in the car. As it turns out, he’s a huge Kylie fan, and he’s going to the same show as I am in May, so that gives me a new reason to look forward to the show.

As it turns out, he’s the same age as my ex and he’s also Hispanic, from Mexico. He’s a real cutie, but I’m afraid that meeting him has served to bring the other one back into my mind. It’s funny that getting over him is taking longer than the relationship itself, but I just have to persevere.

I spoke to the new guy yesterday and we’re going to get together tomorrow, his day off. I’m not sure what we’re going to do yet, but I’m looking forward to it. Stay tuned…



Odds n’ Ends

Well, today is the most beautiful day of the week and here I am at 1PM sitting in my office and typing away. I’m having a couple of friends over for dinner at 5, so I really need to get my ass in gear. I’m also a little excited because tonight one of my friends and I are going to try and get tickets to see Lady Gaga on Saturday at the Nassau Coliseum. I’m crossing my fingers and hoping we get them, but I won’t really get excited until I know we have them in hand. In the meantime, take a look at her ‘Born This Way’ from the Grammy Awards:

I’ve been trying all day to think of “B” words for my second entry into the A-Z Blogging Challenge, and I’ve come up with quite a few. Rather than choose just one, I’m going to use several and spin them in my own unique way. I’m already way behind and I may never get caught up with this thing, so here goes nothing…

B is for Britney…

Britney Spears, that is. I want to say upfront here that I am not the world’s biggest Britney fan. I dated that guy a couple of years ago and he only worked to scar my image of her anyway. I admittedly like a lot of her music, though, especially her new “Femme Fatale” CD. In my Pop Music Weekly Edition from March 29 (see it here), I mentioned the rave reviews it got upon its release and I have to say that I agree. The album is probably one of the best she’s ever done, despite obvious flaws. I’m contemplating a review of the album, as I’ve got a lot of things to say about it. Stay tuned.




B is for Blogging

I originally started this blog as a way to promote my work on what was then called Associated Content. All I had ever done on it before was place links to my pieces there in the hopes that they would get more hits, and my posts were irregular at best. Then, at the beginning of the year I was going through a personal crisis and the true blogging had begun. For the first few weeks of the year and even now once and again I pour my soul into this blog and in the meantime it has morphed into something I had hoped for when I first created it. Where AC/Y!CN had once been the place for me to write my personal stuff, this has become the new place for that and a whole lot more. I love writing this blog and I hope you enjoy reading it. Keep watching as it moves along and grows…



B is for the Billboard Magazine Music Award Nominations

In this week’s edition of Pop Music News, I reported on the upcoming Billboard Music Awards (read it here). The show is being telecast on May 22nd and its already got a lot of hot performers booked. This morning, the magazine announced its nominees for the show and a whole slew of hot favorites are in the running, including Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Bruno Mars, Eminem and a whole lot more. B is for Barbra Streisand Duck Sauce

Yesterday’s “Song of the Day” was a recent club/dance hit named after the famous singer/actress/diva/all-around entertainer who just happens to be THE diva of my good friend Rich. Ever since posting the song, I’ve played it a lot and it’s infectious, crazy beats, coupled with the intermittent spoken words “Barbra Streisand” are simply stuck in my head for the foreseeable future. Oh well, there could be worse things in life. Check out the post here.

Just a quick look at the artists listed here tells you the wide variety of music that I’ve had the privilege to enjoy in my life, from the time I was a little boy right up until today. There’s a little bit of reggae, some disco, the British Invasion, new wave, pop and of course dance music thrown into the mix. These are but a few of the many artists with “B” names that I still take a listen to every now and then to relive fond memories or just to enjoy again and again.

Happy Monday evening all! I say happy because as you already know, I think that once Monday’s over at least the week is one more day towards the weekend and that always brings just a little bit o happiness to my attitude. Today was a good Monday…it went by fast, thank goodness and now the rest of the week’ll be a piece of cake. Riiiiggghhhhtttt!!!!??? LOL! Anyhoo, on with the day’s topic…

GaGa and Madonna



As I told you in this morning’s post, I finally wrote my piece yesterday on Lady GaGa and Madonna and I’m still waiting for word back on it. I really worked hard on the piece and I have a good feeling about it, so we shall see!

In the meantime, I posed the question to Facebook and Twitter friends yesterday about whether or not Lady GaGa had the potential to be the next Madonna and I got answers from both sides of the fence. Here’s a sampling:

On the no side:

Kayla: Absolutely not! Madonna came and shocked the music scene with controversy but she pulled it off by appearing to not give a damn. It didnt seem intentional, it was a this is who i am and i just dont care thing. For gaga the shock value doesnt apply. Not only are we all pretty jaded, but theres no conviction behind gaga. Shes simply doing it for the attention and that kindof thing just doesnt last. I like her music at times but she will never be a madonna.

Karen: Personally I think she's a freak. To put her name in the same sentence as Madonna is almost sacrilegious. I don't think she'll ever have the charisma, longevity or reach she had and still has. In 20 years people will ask, "Who?" upon hearing her name if they hear it at all. I just realized I never typed her name either. Lol

Rose: I agree with the others. Madonna was being Madonna. Gaga is doing what she does strictly for the attention. Madonna was not acting or seeking attention. She was simply being who she is. Gaga is trying to be Madonna. I believe that within the next 5 years, Gaga will simply be gone from the spotlight with another Madonna wannabe in her place. Madonna will live on forever, but Gaga will fall out of stardom.

Reet: No. I think L G is a trendy fad that will fade out like bell bottoms did in the 70's. She's a Madonna- wanna- be.

On the positive side:

Chrissy: i think she has the capability of being the next madonna. she is an intelligent, and witty business woman. i think if she has the longevity to be around in say 20 years, she will graciously name madonna as one of the musicians that paved the way for her. i think right now in 2011, we cant compare the two. madonna is a legend. (in my book:-]) i hope gaga will have her staying power.

Sherri: Lady Gaga has something Madonna never had, a legitimate singing voice. Yes, I think she will continue to reinvent herself (ala Madonna) and stay relevant for years to come. She may be a strane bird, but she is super talented and here to stay!

And then there’s the politically correct:

Jordan: a quick thought... in this fast day and age of music with new one hit wonders daily and the lack of dollars flowing to the artists... I highly doubt that anyone can financially become iconic to continue to put out hits after hits... The music industry is evolving and until it gets a foothold on making money she is highly unlikely to make it...But in this great county anything is possible

First of all, I want to say that I appreciate all of your comments. They’re across the board just like I would’ve expected. In the piece, I played it objectively and concluded pretty much the same thing that Jordan says.

It’s funny, but there are two people in my life, my mom and my good friend Rich, who both actually guessed my topic before I could even tell them. There’s probably a couple more out there who would’ve done the same. I guess the people in my life know me pretty well, huh? LOL.

Seriously, my mom reminded me of the time way back in 1983 when I raved about this new singer who was the absolute bomb. The whole family took a day trip to Action Park in my dad’s van and I played the CD over and over again. Ever since those days, I can associate so many memories from my life with Madonna. I remember all of the controversies of her time:

-Rolling around on the floor in a wedding dress at the MTV Music Awards
-The “Like a Prayer” / Pepsi commercial ruckus
-The “Sex” book
-Flashing her boobies on “Truth or Dare”
-Faux masturbation to “Like a Virgin” on the “Blond Ambition” tour
-The steamy “Justify My Love” video

The list goes on and on. Some of the things my friends have said here about GaGa people were saying about Madonna back in the day. Madonna persevered, though, and she did it through her bread and butter: her music. GaGa’s music is the bottom line with her, too, and with that she’s on the right track, for sure.

I am a music aficionado of the biggest kind, and I try my best to keep up with the ever-changing music landscape. Lady GaGa is awesome! I’ve got her double set “Fame/Fame Monster” and I absolutely love the music! Her hits “Bad Romance”, “Poker Face” and “Just Dance”, to name a few are genuinely good, and so are some of the songs that weren’t hits. “Boys, Boys, Boys” and “Summer Boys” absolutely rock and “Teeth” is simply da’ bomb!

I do believe that of anyone out there who’s come after Mo, she’s the one with the most potential to go far, much further than Britney or Christina or any of those other Madonna wannabes. No, in all honesty I don’t think she’ll ever quite match the sphere of influence that Madonna’s had in her time, but she’ll definitely be around for a long, long time to come.

A final birthday wish for GaGa

As I also mentioned this morning, today is Lady GaGa’s 25th birthday, and so I’d like to present another video from her catalog. This is one of my favorites, and ironically it was also compared to Madonna’s “La Isla Bonita” at the time it came out. Eh, who cares, right? Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and it’s not so bad to be a fan of both singers.. Enjoy “Alejandro” and for one last time, Happy Birthday GaGa!

I'm celebrating the completion of my Yahoo Music article by honoring Lady GaGa with "Song of the Day" today. Since I've been putting up a lot of Madonna videos here and on FB, I figured I'd give her some props. The piece I wrote yesterday is entitled, "Is Lady GaGa the Next Madonna?" and hopefully it'll be approved for publication. Fingers crossed! We'll see...

Anyway, this is definitely my most favorite of GaGa's songs to dance to in the club. It always kind of reminded me of Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse of the Heart" for some reason. I think it's the singalong quality of the chorus. Whenever it's played, the dance floor is packed, and for good reason.

Anywho, my good friend Rich LOVES the first line in the song:

"I want your ugly, I want your disease..."

For some reason it gives him chuckles and because of him I get them too when I hear it.

I just learned from looking through my Twitter account that today just happens to be GaGa's 25th birthday, a pleasant coincidence. So, Happy Birthday GaGa!!!! Enjoy "Bad Romance."
