South African Frikkadels also known as Cape MeatballsIngredients2 lbs ground beef
3/4 cup rye bread crumbs1/4 cup water
2 oz butter
1 onion, finely chopped
2 medium eggs
1/4 tsp allspice
2 tsp Worcestershire sauce 1/4 cup olive oil
salt to taste
black pepper to taste
Instructions.....Serves 4-6

Heat half the butter in a large frying pan, add the onion and sauté
for 5 minutes, stirring from time to time. Meanwhile, soak the bread in water and then squeeze dry. Place bread in a large mixing bowl and mash with a fork. Add the onion mince, eggs, salt, pepper, Worcestershire sauce , and allspice to the bread mixture, blend thoroughly, then shape the meat mixture into balls about the size of a brussel sprout. Saute meatballs in olive oil over medium heat turning often, until
thoroughly cooked and well browned.
According to tradition this dish is usually served with mashed potatoes and Train Smash (an onion and tomato sauce).
