August 12th, 2011 - Catching Up

Happy Friday all! It’s another beautiful day out on Long Island and I should be at the beach….maybe later… There’s been lots of things going on the past few days and lots of catching up to do, so here goes nothing…

My House

Crisis averted

Last week, I shared some disturbing news about a mortgage escrow statement I received in the mail. It had said that I either had to come up with almost $5000 or have my mortgage payment go up by $400 a month, neither of which I can afford. I thought I was going to lose my house, and even though I do eventually want to, I don’t want to lose it that way.

Anyway, to make a long story short, I made a few phone calls last week and the bank investigated the escrow account, finding three errors on their part. In the end I may even end up having a surplus in my escrow. Now it looks like I’m going to be able to stay here…for now. Whew!

Crazy Stupid Love

I went to the movies the other night only because it starred Ryan Gosling, the hunky actor who my buddy Rich told me about. The movie is called “Crazy Stupid Love,” and it stars Gosling, Steve Carell, and Julianne Moore. The movie was okay, but boy was my friend right about Ryan Gosling! Absolutely gorgeous in every way and well worth the price of admission!

Circus Wednesday

I’m almost getting to the point where I know I’m going to start missing going to Circus on Wednesdays once school starts. Once again, I had a fabulous time and I’m making new friends. It really is a special place, so if you’re a PLU (People Like Us – or rather “Me”!) and you live on Long Island, you should definitely check out the Lizard Lounge in Bohemia on a Wednesday evening.

That’s what friends are for

They say a person is lucky to have one or two good friends in their life. I’m starting to find out that although I thought I had just a couple, there are others who either are or have the potential to be true friends, and I feel very blessed to have each of them in my life.

Lisa

This summer I’ve met a few good people with potential for long-lasting friendships and one of them is Lisa. I’ve mentioned Lisa before. She’s the woman that remembered me from religion class way back in the 2nd grade, about 40 years ago. Though I actually first met her again last year, I’ve spent a lot of time with Lisa this summer and I’m starting to enjoy her company more and more.

We had a good time over at the Grove last week and I even drove her home. She’d told me she owned a barber shop and I had promised her a visit there, which I made this week. What a nice place she has! It’s called Hats Off and it’s kind of in between an old fashioned barber shop and a beauty salon, nicely decorated and very comfortable. Lisa made me feel so welcome when I got there, telling the whole crowd of people waiting how we met, and I’ve got to say she gave me probably the best haircut of my life!

Rita

Rita is a fellow teacher in my school district. We’ve known each other a couple of years and have grown to be good friends. I hadn’t realized until I had breakfast with her yesterday just how much I missed her not being around. What started off as what should have been an hour breakfast turned into a three-plus hour talkathon. Love ya Reet!

Ozzie

Ozzie is one of the newest people in my life and I’ve already spoken of him a few times in this space. We don’t know each other well enough yet, and I haven’t been sure just what kind of place he’d take in my life, but I think I’m starting to figure it out. We were supposed to go to Splash together last night, but at the last minute he couldn’t make it. He did figure into the night though, when all was said and done…

When you least expect it, expect it!

Every once in awhile I‘ve wondered what it would be like to run into him again. I couldn’t imagine how I’d react, and now a day later I know. Just like in our old days together I feel like I always either do or say the wrong things concerning him and last night was no exception.

It’s funny, for the past several weeks I haven’t gone out alone and yesterday I almost had a car-full. I was kind of hoping to go alone for a change and things seemed to align themselves for this most unexpected purpose for I did end up going alone and for the first time since January, I bumped into him, and it wasn’t pretty.

All I will say about it is that I was standing on the dance floor at Splash and spotted him. He’d already seen me and was coming my way. I don’t know why, but I just turned in the other direction and started walking away. It was just a gut reaction and of course, it wasn’t a good one. In the long run we did speak a little, but I think both of our nights were kind of soured and definitely uncomfortable afterwards. I told him later on that I wish I had a redo, and that’s the truth!

A Developing Friendship

During the evening I texted Ozzie to tell him that I wished he was there with me. I was uneasy and I could’ve used someone to talk with and dance with. After a couple of texts back and forth, he told me to come through on my way home, which I did. Since he’s new in my life and doesn’t really know about this particular history of mine, he was a good person to talk to. I got to his house around 3:30 and we talked for at least a couple of hours. I went home feeling much better.

In all I’m learning that even though he’s got this public persona and has a lot of acquaintance ‘friends,’ he is really a genuine person beneath it all and I’m really glad I met him. I think he was brought into my life for a purpose and little by little I’m starting to believe ours will be an enduring friendship. So for like the umpteenth time, thank you Oz!

The Department of Health comes a calling

Yesterday I received an email from a guy at the NY State Department of Health. He said that he wanted to speak to me regarding some articles I’d written on Examiner. He’s with the HIV/AIDS area of the department and I have done some pieces on the subject, so I’m sure those are what he wants to talk to me about. Right now I’m waiting for a phone call from him and I’m a little nervous as to what this is about. Stay tuned…

Well, I think I’m all caught up now. If you’re still reading this, I want to both thank you and apologize for giving you so much to read. I’m always humbled by how many people are following this blog and I hope that whatever I put in here, whether it be cool music or my silly, innocuous personal stories, gives people some entertainment, perhaps a few laughs, and lots of smiles. My friend Michael even gave me a nice shout-out on FB this morning, telling others in a comment to read my blog, so thank you Michael!

Here’s a Robyn song to mark how I’m feeling right about now. Yes, what’s past is past and no one can go back and change it, but if only to dream…

Song of the Day - With Every Heartbeat - Robyn with Kleerup

Wow! I have no idea really how I stumbled across this one, but I'm sure glad I did! Anyone who's read me knows what a huge Robyn fan I'd become over the past year. As I wrote in a piece on her 'Body Talk' trilogy, her songs are pop songs, yes, but they're far from so much of the mindless pop songs recorded over the years. Robyn's lyrics are always thoughtful and relevant to many a situation, as I so deeply experienced over the past winter.

'With Every Heartbeat' is a song off of Robyn's 2007 self-titled album. The song hit #1 in the UK and actually charted here in the US, peaking at #28. That could be why I liked it the first time I heard it the other day. I may just have heard it before...on the radio and probably even at her concert, but I don't remember.

The song is typical, and masterful, Robyn. The lyrics are tender and raw and of course the music is downright serial! I've probably listened to it about 25 times over the past two days...twice so far as I write this entry. I don't know, but it feels really good to have a new Robyn song to enjoy as much as I do, one that's totally for me!

With Every Heartbeat - With Every Heartbeat (With Kleerup) - EP

With Every Heartbeat

Maybe we could make it all right
We could make it better sometime
Maybe we could make it happen, baby

We could keep trying but things will never change

So I don't look back
Still I'm dying with every step I take
But I don't look back

Just a little, little bit better
Good enough to waste some time
Tell me, would it make you happy, baby

We could keep trying but things will never change

So I don't look back
Still I'm dying with every step I take
But I don't look back

We could keep trying but things will never change

So I don't look back
Still I'm dying with every step I take
But I don't look back

And it hurts with every heartbeat
And it hurts with every heartbeat
And it hurts with every heartbeat
And it hurts with every heartbeat
And it hurts with every heartbeat
And it hurts with every heartbeat
And it hurts with every heartbeat
And it hurts with every heartbeat

May 23, 2011 - Invasion of the Men's Dept. Redux, Splash/Ritz Saturdays, Adele and Robyn in Out

Well it’s Monday afternoon and the third time I’m giving this post a try. Another weekend has come and gone, but that’s okay, though, cause summer’s right around the corner and I’ll have plenty of time to sleep and relax then, lol. It was a pretty good weekend, albeit a tiring one…

Macy’s Private Men’s Sale

This weekend was Macy’s semi-annual private men’s sale, which is usually the time I buy most of the clothes I have. This sale is the best Macy’s has, as it’s the one sale that I know of where there are (almost) no exclusions. Since I normally like to buy designer clothes, this one’s always a win-win for me, and so every time they have one I take the opportunity to get to Macys. The problem is, at first they used to have them two, maybe three times a year and now they’re running them way too often, luring me in almost bi-monthly with the promise of 25% off.

I wouldn’t normally bring up a shopping excursion such as this, but I experienced once again something I’ve written about before. In the article Invasion of the Men’s Department: Who’s to Blame?, I discuss an issue that has plagued me for years. Every time I go shopping for clothes, I always seem to have to fight with women everywhere, at the clothes racks, the underwear department and yes, even in the fitting room. It’s a pet peeve that never ceases, and I experienced it once again on Saturday.

After gathering some new frocks to try on in the Inc., Ecko and Calvin Klein areas, I headed off to the fitting room to try everything on. I hopped into a stall near the entrance and started to change. Within moments I heard a couple right outside my door.

“Is it okay if I come in?’ a woman’s voice whispered.

“Yeah, don’t worry about it,” her apparent boyfriend answered.

My blood began to boil as the woman stood right outside my stall, making the usual commentary on the clueless male shopper. I had wanted to scream “no” in answer to her question, but that’s not my style. The two of them continued on in his little fashion show as if there were nothing extraordinary about it.

“Ooh, that makes your butt look hot!”

“Nope….I don’t like the color.”

“Those are too long.”

As this went on I was screaming inside my head. I so wanted to tell the woman to get the heck outta there. If I were to walk into the ladies fitting room while she was trying things on, I’m sure she would have freaked out and the authorities would’ve been called in.

When I was done, though, the young, pretty woman gave me a smile and all I could do was smile back and think “bitch” under my breath. Nah, this wasn’t worth fighting for, but still: grrrrrrr!!!!!

Splash/Ritz Saturdays

After resting up at home on Friday night, I headed out to the city one last time before Fire Island summer weekends start next week. (Not that I won’t be going into the city anymore, just not as much, which I’m thankful for, especially with the price of gas these days.) I got off to a late start, but that was okay because I beat the midnight deadline when the Splash cover doubles from $10 to $20.

Splash was great fun from the get go. It was more crowded than usual and the music was smoking. I’m not sure if it was just because I was in a good mood or what last night, but I was just having such a good time dancing and talking with people I really could’ve stayed at Splash all night. I did have one uncomfortable moment when this dude kept grabbing me on the dance floor around the waist every time I put my hands in the air, but I handled him okay and escaped downstairs to my favorite bartender.

I’m not sure if I’ve ever mentioned him before, but there’s this guy who works downstairs behind the bar. I have no idea how he came to be my bartender, but he is. Now all (or most) of the bartenders at Splash are good looking and their uniform is a pair of skivvies, and this dude is no exception. He’s tall, sculpted, beautiful, and a heck of a nice guy. I’ve been going to him for months, but I have no idea what his name is, lol.

Anyway, as I sat at the bar for a drink, this really big, shirtless dude came and sat next to me. We exchanged a glance or two and just as I thought to myself that he really should put his shirt back on, he turned to me and asked me if he looked gross. Being the good liar that I am, I told him that he wasn’t and turned back towards my drink. The dude then leaned over the bar and whispered something to my bartender. All he did was shake his head and the guy walked away.

“But your face is…” the bartender said aloud once the dude had moved away. He turned to me and smiled. Ah, we had a moment, lol!

Wild Night at Ritz

As I said earlier, I was having such a good time at Splash I really could’ve stayed there all night, but at around 1:30 I had a sudden urge to go to the Ritz. I have yet to have a bad time there and I guess I was just curious enough to check out the scene. All I can say here was that I’m glad I went, because I had one of the best times in recent memory. For the first time in like forever, I was up and dancing with these two guys when suddenly the lights went on and the music stopped.

At first, I thought it might be a raid or something, but then I realized it was 4AM. The bar was closing and it was time to go home, but not before spilling out on to the street and chatting with the guys I had been dancing with earlier. By the time I got home, it was almost 6AM. I can’t wait to move into the city!

Out Magazine

This month’s Out Magazine features two of my favorite female singers. Cover girl and piping hot songstress Adele sat down for an interview with the gay periodical’s Aaron Hicklin on the eve of her current US tour. The interview is a great read and the photos, by photographer Perry Ogden, are slamming, especially the cover shot. Click the pic below to check it out:

The other singer featured in the June issue is none other than Robyn, who played such a big part of my life just a few short months ago. The talented Swedish pop star talks to Out’s Noah Michelson about her very un-pop-like approach to being successful, as well as her popularity within the gay culture. It’s another great read!

It’s too bad that lately I no longer listen to either of these lovely and talented young ladies. I’m afraid their music, although absolutely wonderful, brings up too many painful memories for me and I can’t help but hit the ‘next’ button whenever one of their songs comes into play on my iPod. Maybe one day I’ll listen again!

Well, I think I’ve said more than a mouthful today and I’m going to finish up with a new semi-regular feature. I recently published a piece on Y!CN called Retweeting Great Quotes on Twitter for Both Inspiration and Followers. It features some of my favorite things about Twitter: great quotes. Since there are so many great quotes tweeted each and every day, I figured I may just have to share a good one or two at the end of my posts. Today I share two quotes that I believe in wholeheartedly. Hopefully they will give you inspiration:

Find your passion, whatever it may be. Become it and let it become you and you will find great things happen for you, to you and because of you.”

@InflictTheTruth

Life is too short so kiss slowly, laugh insanely, love truly and forgive quickly.”

@OMGloveislouder

I hope you’ve enjoyed today’s post and once again, thanks for reading! Enjoy Adele's 'Rolling in the Deep':

April 5, 2011 - Just a thought and a video

Hello everyone! I'm just sitting here, tired and looking forward to sleep. I often feel that there's not enough hours in the day and I only wish I had more of them. Ah, well, it's a never-ending quest to organize myself to make the most of my time. I feel like I've been thinking about it forever, but I never seem to get it going...

I wasn't planning on posting today, but I've had something on my mind all day and I wanted to mark it in some way before I head off to sleep. Today is two months since the Robyn concert and two months since I last contacted him. His birthday's coming up, so he's been in my mind a little more lately and when I saw the date today I remembered February 5th.

Anyway, it sucks, but I do still think of him at times. I dunno, I've been getting a good move-on with my life, networking and getting out there, but there's still a lurking sadness over what transpired. Not that I'm feeling down all the time, I'm not. It's just that every once in awhile, like now, things remind me of him and I just feel sad.

Part of my healing has been to wipe him from my thoughts. I no longer listen to Robyn as much, nor Adele...and I hate to say this, I really do, but I've come to hate Pink's 'Raise Your Glass.' Whenever any of these songs come on the radio or my iPod, I quickly change em'! I don't need to be sad, ya know, and sometimes you've just gotta do what you've got to do to help yourself.

So, in memory, or acknowledgement of this moment, I hereby present "Dancing On My Own," by Robyn. It's the most appropriate one for where I stand now, for it's one Robyn song I loved before I met him, so I can separate it from the negative thoughts of our time. Some of her other songs bring me back to memories I'd rather not think of, but when I hear this one, I can look back and smile, for that was one of the happiest memories of whatever it was we had, singing along to it together for the first time as we danced.

So, for what it's worth, enjoy Robyn's "Dancing on My Own." It's a really good song!!!!

Song(s) of the Day - Robyn's Best at Radio City

Last night I was in my car listening to my "Favorites" playlist on my iPod and Robyn came on. When the tracks reached "Stars 4 Ever", I said to myself that I would post it on FB in the morning, so that's just what I did. There's no video for the tune, but there is an audio track set to a photo of Robyn which is usually fine for FB.

To my surprise, however, there were plenty of videos of concert footage featuring Robyn singing the song. I scrolled around a bit and voila! There she was singing it at Radio City, the show I had seen. As I watched and listened, I saw that there were other videos of the concert and since it is Sunday, I figured I'd post some of them here as multiple "Songs of the Day."

As I noted previously here and in my article, which I'll link below, the concert was awesome, simply for the great music and mutual admiration between Robyn and her fans. No matter the circumstances surrounding the show for me, it was a night worth remembering and these scenes bring me back to that great show. I hope you'll watch a couple to see what I mean. Enjoy!

Time Machine

This is the opening of the concert, and one of my new favorite Robyn songs!

"Hey what did I do?
Can't believe the fit I just threw.
Stupid
Wanted the reaction...

I remember the words
How I said them so they would hurt
but then, I regret my actions.

If I could press rewind
Rewind the take
Redefine the line
We make mistakes,
take it back in time
Just one day...hey!

So all I need is a time machine
A one way track
cause I'm taking it back, taking it back..."

Dancing On My Own

This was one of the best songs of the show! It's the first Robyn song from "Body Talk" that I loved and it was clear that this Grammy nominated song was a favorite of the audience members, too, as you can hear them singing along. Ah, goosebumps!

Stars 4 Ever

"You and me on the hood of my car, Saturday night, watching the stars."

This was a great sing along!

Konichiwa Bitches

Nuthin but fun!

Hang With Me

The sound on this on is not so great, but the video is closer up than the others, so that's why I chose it!

"...and if you do me right, I'm gonna do right by you..." :-\

Indestructible

Simply awesome! Great video, bad singing by a nearby fan!

Get Myself Together

For some reason there are only two videos of this one and neither of them start at the beginning???

Here are a couple of Yahoo featured articles by me on Yahoo Contributor Network:

Song of the Day - "When Doves Cry", by Prince and a surprise cover by Robyn

“When Doves Cry,” by Prince, is one of my all time favorite songs! For me, the song will forever be associated with my first steps into Studio 54. The year was 1984 and a good friend of mine had free tickets to go to the infamous, but by then waning nightclub. I remember walking into the cavernous hall for the first time with a million wondrous images flashing all around me. I was in complete awe!

We stepped out on to the packed dance floor where a giant lighted heart swung like a pendulum over the revelers. A large video screen hung towards the back wall of the club, treating the masses with larger than life moving images in time to the music playing on the speakers. The first thing I remember seeing was the set of doors opening to reveal a floor covered in flower petals (purple, of course!) and a big white bathtub beyond. Prince was lying there with his head back, and soon rose to turn around and look at us.

Dig if you will the picture
Of you and I engaged in a kiss

He gets out of the tub and crawls across the floor.

The sweat of your body covers me,
Can you my darling, can you picture this?

And the song played on...and we danced. It was the beginning of a very memorable night. The song was the first hit off of the multi-talented singer’s “Purple Rain” soundtrack and it’s still my favorite track on an album full of great tracks. Back in those days, practically everyone I knew had the album, which was full of infectious sounds and taboo lyrics.

I probably saw the movie five times, at least, and each time being in the theater was like going to a concert, the crowds getting up and dancing upon the first lines of the movie:

Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to get this thing called life...

But that’s another song...For now, enjoy Prince’s “When Doves Cry.” To this day I have no idea exactly what the song is about, but it doesn’t matter…it’s awesome!

How can you just leave me standing
Alone in a world that’s so cold…

Robyn's Cover

Here's a coincidental aside to the post: In looking for the video to "When Doves Cry," I discovered that Prince doesn't allow his videos on YouTube. This was only after sifting through video after video and not finding what I was looking for.

During my search I found something most unexpected. It seems that Robyn, the honoree for the past two days "Song of the Day," covered the Prince tune on video, in the studio. Check this out:

February 6, 2011 - Robyn at Radio City; Splash; Allyance

Today has been a day full of writing! I’ve been working on stuff since I woke up around 10:30 this morning and all I can say is that I’m glad it’s not summer otherwise I’d be missing out on being outside, even though I do have to get out of here soon. There’s a lot to talk about today, so here goes:

Robyn

I did it. After planning all along not to go to the Robyn concert yesterday I changed my mind late in the day. I couldn’t help but have Robyn on the brain all day and so I listened to her “Body Talk” albums for most of it. I decided around 5 o’clock that I couldn’t let it pass and so I quickly showered and dressed and was off to Radio City.

This was one of the first times I missed the opening acts, which wasn’t so bad. I did catch the tail end of an act called “Diamond Rings”, but I hardly paid attention anyway. Robyn was awesome! The show was sold out, which I hadn’t known beforehand, and the crowd was very enthusiastic. It’s hard to remember a concert that I’ve been to where the whole audience was on their feet dancing throughout the show. A review of it was my first article of the day and you can check it out here.

This was the second time in my life I went to a concert by myself. Those who know me and have been following my life know the situation that brought me to the Robyn concert, but even the last time I went to a concert alone it was because of dealings with an ex. About three years ago I bought tickets to see Mary J Blige, also at Radio City. When I bought them, I had no idea who was going to go with me and as the time got closer I realized that the only other person that loved her as much as me was Joe. So I asked him. It was about a year after we had broken up.

Unfortunately for me, the date of the concert was his birthday and when I told him that he immediately said no. “I’m sorry John, but I don’t want to spend my birthday with you,” was his actual response. So I went alone, wasting the second ticket I had bought. It wasn’t so bad, a lot like going to the movies alone. Once the lights go out it doesn’t really matter if you’re with someone or not. That show was great, too, even though it carried with it a lot of the same feelings as last night.

Robyn at Radio City last night. For more photos and the set list, click here.

Splash

After the show, I headed on down to Splash. I had parked my car down there and took the subway uptown to Radio City as I didn’t want to have to pay for parking. It was the first time I’d ridden the subway in a long time and I forgot how pleasant that can be. Of course the trains were few and far between as it was Saturday night and both ways I had to wait at least twenty minutes for a train. Oh well, at least I got to see some rats and the Metrocard was much cheaper than a parking garage.

It felt good to go dancing again. The music was pretty good, so I got to work off a lot of calories on the dance floor, but since I had gone into the city so much earlier than usual I left a little early. I was tired! The bar staff made a funny last night, too. They were all bedecked in firemen’s hats. At first I hadn’t realized it, but then I remembered that there was a fire in the coatroom there last Saturday (the one week I hadn’t gone, thankfully!) and they were simply acknowledging it. Ha ha!

Allyance

The second piece I penned this morning was about a project I’m somewhat excited about. I first learned of it through Facebook pal and fellow Long Island writer Lady Samantha. It’s about a new anthology of LGBT works being compiled into a book called Allyance and it’s meant to help foster understanding about Long Island’s unique LGBT community. I submitted a piece for the project and if all goes well I will get my first ever publication in a real book. How cool is that? Stay tuned. Here’s the article: Call for submissions for Allyance, a Long Island LGBTQ anthology.

As always, thanks for reading. Catch you next time...

Song of the Day - "Get Myself Together" by Robyn

Today's song is another one by Robyn. It's a song with special significance to me. You see, it's the final song from the "Soundtrack of a Relationship" and every time I hear it, I can't help but think of how appropriate the words were/are for my ex. She performed it as her first encore last night at Radio City and as she sang it I couldn't help but to keep looking over to my left at the empty seat that would have been his.

Life is all about learning from your experiences and unfortunately I think I learned this lesson a little too late. Having spent the better part of my life in a monogomous relationship, I haven't had many experiences with other partners. I'm probably as inexperienced as they come. Joe was one type of person, and the relationship I shared with him was very one-dimensional. Communication was virtually non-existent, and so that was what I became accustomed to, always having to guess what was on his mind. In response, I closed him off to my inner feelings and was never able to get used to openness and honesty.

He is a very different person than Joe, and I never quite learned how to take what he said at face value. When he told me he needed to be alone, to work on getting through his pain and find himself as a single person, I thought of things from a selfish perspective, how it affected me. I never truly saw things through his eyes. He told me he wasn't pushing me away, but that's exactly how I saw it, and I realize now that I was wrong.

Though he tried reaching out to me because he wanted me still in his life, I scoffed at the notion, seeing only that I wasn't going to be his boyfriend. He said I was being selfish and I only see that deep down inside I was. I couldn't see the proverbial forest for the trees and realize that I had it good even then, after he broke up with me. He still had feelings for me and we enjoyed each other's company. What was so bad about that?

Now there's nothing. Through my own selfish and angry reactions to an email that was intended to soothe me, I've completely turned him away. I took what he said the wrong way and became angry, again thinking of myself and not enough about how hard it's been for him, too! I said on Friday that I had a lot of regrets and I still do. In the words of Robyn, all I need is a "Time Machine," a one way track to take it all back. But unfortunately, what's past is past and I cannot undo the things I've done, the things I've said and the way I said them, nor the misunderstandings I've harbored. These are things I will regret for a long time to come.

Going to the show last night was a bittersweet experience. Though I was not planning to go at all, I did myself no favors by listening to Robyn all day and so I decided to go around 6PM. I made it just in time for the show, and the experience was good, but sad at the same time, as I expected it to be. She really was superb, but not having him there made a lot less enjoyable. For now and for always, listening to her will always remind me of him.

Take a look at the lyrics below to "Get Myself Together." Like I said, they're eerily similar to the situation I found myself in a little more than a month ago. The song is a typical example of the sophistication of Robyn's style of pop music. It's upbeat and lyrical, and great fun to listen to. I once looked upon it with sadness, but now I see that it carries a message of healing and promise, and so from here on I will listen and sing along with a smile in my heart. Enjoy "Get Myself Together."

It's all over like steps in the first snow
Something's been building up and it's gonna blow
My momma called me last night, she said what nothing else fits
Pick up the pieces and move on
I see the flashing lights, just can't make sense of the bits
It's like my mind is gone

I got ... got to get ...
Get my head back on
I got ... got to get ...
Myself together
When this hurt is gone
I got ... got to get ...
Myself together

I got ... got to get ...
Can't tell what's going wrong
I wish there's something could be done
I'm not that clever
When this hurt is gone
I got ... got to get ...
Myself together

Can't stand to see you upset
But you already know
The more up close it gets
The less I wanna go

I saw my brother last night
He said I know you too well
You can't pretend that nothing's wrong
I see the fuse that ignites, like I'm outside of myself
It's like my mind is gone

I got ... got to get ...
Get my head back on
I got ... got to get ...
Myself together
When this hurt is gone
I got ... got to get ...
Myself together

I got ... got to get ...
Can't tell what's going wrong
I wish there's something could be done
Knock that cover
When this hurt is gone
I got ... got to get ...
Myself together

My daddy put me aside
Like when I was a child
He said I trust you decide
On what you know is right
And for whatever it's worth,
I am on your side
There's no denying the mess
That I got us in
And I've been trying my best
Not to make a scene
Just can't make a sense of it all
It's like my mind is gone

I got ... got to get ...
Get my head back on
I got ... got to get ...
Myself together
When this hurt is gone
I got ... got to get ...
Myself together
